M.A.D.
The Cold War ended without a single shot fired by a Soviet or an American soldier against each other. Why? Both sides wanted to win. However, both sides also wanted to live. There were no Russian suicide bombers. The much ridiculed, yet highly successful policy of Mutually Assured Destruction worked. Both sides knew that if either side attacked, both would be destroyed. What will happen if Iran builds a nuclear arsenal?
The Soviets were smart enough to hide their real intentions, at least as much as possible. The Iranians boast of their intentions, whenever possible. The Soviets never publicly stated their goal of a worldwide socialist dictatorship. The Iranians are proud to be the people that bring about a worldwide Islamic caliphate.
We are not facing the same enemy of the past. We are facing a fanaticism, coupled with a desire to die. We are facing an enemy who believes that dying for Islam is the greatest accomplishment possible on earth. Will the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction work with this enemy?
If Iran builds a nuclear arsenal, then we will have indeed assured our mutual destruction.
