Appeasement
The anti-war proponents have a noble cause. However, they should realize that history has shown their actions only cause war.
Winston Churchill said "Chamberlin had a choice between war and dishonor. He chose dishonor and got war".
Churchill was referring to Neville Chamberlin's appeasment of Adolf Hitler. The Europeans wanted to avoid war at all costs. World War I was brutal. It took the lives of every fourth European. A generation of young men were slaughtered. It was truly hell on earth.
Hitler conquered Checkolsovakia without firing a shot. The Munich Agreement that Chamberlin signed allowed Hitler one more territory, without having to declare war.
Chamberlin angrily denounced Hitler's move as a violation of the Munich Agreement, but it didn't matter. German troops occupied the territory formerly known as Checkolsovakia.
The English and French found their balls after that, but it was too late. Six months later, World War II erupted.
The Europeans saw this coming years before it happened. In 1936 Hitler sent German troops into the Rhineland, an area of Germany that was demilitarized by the Versailles Treaty that ended World War I.
This was Hitler's biggest gamble and it paid off. The French and British did not respond. Germany sent in 3 brigades, with orders to retreat if the French crossed the border. The French Army had 100 Divisions, but it did not attack.
Hitler knew then that his enemies had no stomach for war and he could continue to build his war machine. By 1939 it was ready and Hitler launched World War II.
When I read quotes from Chamberlin, I think there are many people today I can picture who would say the same things. Chamberlin wanted "peace in our time". He could have had it if he attacked Hitler in 1936.
