My dog, the philosopher
I was watching my dog play recently. She is so fun to watch. This dog is athletic. She’s quick, she’s fast and she’s strong. She has chewed, no…eaten, toys that I thought were unchewable. The chair legs in the living room are a testament to her teething days. If she got pissed, she could bite a finger off. However, one of the things I love about this dog is she is such a sweetheart. She actually hugs me with both paws around my neck when I get home from work. She wouldn’t hurt anybody.
My neighbor was laughing his ass off recently when he saw a big dog from across the street come over to check out my dogs, who were out front with me getting the paper. The big dog took after my dog. Jynx ran like hell. She was running circles around the yard and yipping like her ass was on fire. The big dog probably only wanted to sniff her butt, but she didn’t know that. I was able to open the door and keep big dog out (thank god!) after Jynx ran in, thus ending the incident.
Being me, this made me think of evolution. Jynx has a good profile for survival. She runs like hell from potential danger. When something triggers Fear, like seeing a deer for the first time (and yes, that was funny), Jynx takes off running. For survival purposes, this is a very positive characteristic. Some label it cowardice, but running from danger is indeed a positive survival trait. However, there comes a time when fighting overcomes running. Jynx could have taken that big dog. She could have run circles around him and snipped at his legs until he was crippled. He probably wouldn’t have gotten a bite in. Jynx is an evolutionary prize. She can run like hell away, and chooses to do so at every opportunity, but can fight like hell if she gets mad. This is a model for survival.
The United States has been running from danger for almost 30 years. Other than for a brief period after September 11th, the US has been running away from the threat of Islamic Fascism. People want to pretend the danger doesn’t exist. A few bombings a year, occurring in foreign lands, and only killing a hundred or so Americans per year, is ignorable. Ignoring the threat is an easier option than confronting it. However, just like an animal that would prefer to flee is sometimes forced to fight, the US is in a place where it can no longer run.
Pakistan got nuclear weapons without anyone knowing it was working on them. North Korea got nuclear weapons by cheating on an agreement it made with the US. Russia got nuclear weapons 10 years before the official projections thought it possible. China got nukes 5 years ahead of projections. The Israelis just recently blew something up in Syria that the Syrians didn’t make a big deal about. “Oh well…the Israelis invaded our airspace and dropped bombs inside our country…but we’re not really going to make big a stink on this one”. There isn’t one piece of rubble left at that site. The Syrians cleaned up the mess those nasty Jews made pretty quickly, and very quietly.
The current members of the Nuclear Weapons Club all have at least one thing in common – they want to live. The concept of Mutually Assured Destruction, that worked so well against the Russians in the Cold War, will not work against jihadists who want to die for their cause. The mullahs of Iran believe in a strange religion that makes it very likely they are interested in starting a World War. These people don’t fear destruction, they welcome it. If these people get nukes, the world will quickly become a very different place.
There is no more time for ignoring the problem. The Middle East is about to get nuked up. If Iran gets the Bomb, then rest assured that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and who knows who else will get the Bomb. If we don’t stop Iran, we will have no justification for stopping anyone else. A nuked-up Middle East is the worst possible thing for the planet. Even the peaceniks have to see that.
It’s been an unearned luxury running away for the last 30 years. A cruise missile here, a short war there, a precision bombing once in a while…that was a comfortable way to fight a war against an enemy that wants to kill or enslave every last one of us. However, the time has come to really fight the enemy or face substantial damage. The enemy hasn’t quit, hasn’t compromised and hasn’t given any conditions for cease fire. The enemy wants to annihilate us. The enemy is about to get nuclear weapons. The enemy is willing to die for his cause. Are we? It’s time to fight.
